Brexit: where are we now – and what next? Claire Fox and Lord Adonis.

On Tuesday evening Sevenoaks School hosted Lord Andrew Adonis and Claire Fox talking on “Brexit – Where Are We Now – and What Next?”.

At least that was the strapline on the publicity – but everything was changing as we gathered and, as we all know, nobody really has any idea of “what next”.

Some 360 people attended and the chairman, Adam Boulton, started with a show of hands as to who had voted Remain and who had voted Leave – it was, unsurprisingly, an overwhelmingly Remain audience.

When SSTIE met Tim Martin

(Originally “Sevenoaks Leafleting”)

10:00 – 13:00 Saturday 23 February 2019

It was half term and Sevenoaks was extremely quiet for a Saturday; our pitch was not great as with Tesco now closed the footfall at that point is very low and really very little more than those walking up or down the High Street. But our team of 11 was well spread out in other locations too.

On balance I would say a relatively pro-remain day – but then it was in Sevenoaks.

The first Anti-Brexit speech

No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.

As well as if a manor of thy friend’s
Or of thine own were:
Any man’s death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.

John Donne, Rector of St Nicholas church, Sevenoaks. 1624.

Record number of signatures gathered for a People’s Vote

In a rather chilly and windy Sevenoaks on Saturday 26th Jan 2019  SSTIE had 16 members and supporters out  leafleting and canvassing for a people’s vote. We were also collecting signatures for the PV petition; 108 signatures  were gathered which is a record for us in terms of interest in signing this petition and is a marker for the increasing interest in a People’s Vote.

Members reported another excellent morning on the streets of Sevenoaks –  with a big majority of passers-by accepting leaflets.

70% of Tonbridge shoppers want a Final Say

On Saturday morning we asked shoppers in Tonbridge whether they wanted a Final Say on Brexit and 435 people put a sticker on the board:

  • 291 want a Final Say vote
  • 121 do not want a Final Say vote
  • 23 people did not know

Of the people who knew what they wanted, over 70% wanted a Final Say vote.

At least three former local councillors had their say – one Tory, one Labour and one LibDem – and they all wanted a Final Say. Tom Tugendhat, the Tonbridge and Malling MP was out with a photographer and told one of our group that he would return and have his photo taken with us – sadly he had not done so when we packed up at one o’clock.

Many said they were fed up by the whole rigmarole, but also a number who wanted a proper vote, feeling that the first was based entirely on lies

The main argument that we heard against a Final Say was that we have already voted and it would be undemocratic to have another vote.

There is a very negative view, by both those saying Yes and those saying NO, of the Government, the Labour leadership, and of politicians generally for the way in which this is all being dealt with.

81% of 535 Sevenoaks shoppers want a Final Say

Our Brexitometer Survey polled its largest sample of west-Kent shoppers – 535 – on 12 January 2019.

There was just one question: Do you want a final say?

An overwhelming 81% of respondents want a final say on our future.

These results have been sent to Sir Michael Fallon (MP for Sevenoaks and Swanley) and Tom Tugendhat (MP for Tonbridge and Malling) in advance of Tuesday’s vote on Theresa May’s withdrawal deal.
